The beauty of nature is you cannot control it. Instead, nature can take total control over you. It will take you from one end of the planet to the other one. It can make you fall in love or it can make you hate it. It can make you breathless or it can make you mad. Northern lights tours in Willow, Alaska will make you remember that.

What should I wear?

Some good things to wear on this tour would be layers. Meaning wearing multiple pants, shirts underneath each other, warm hat, and multiple socks to keep the wind and temperatures out.

  • Heated Jacket, heated gloves, heated apparel. (optional but very warm) (www.ororowear.com)
  • Insulated snow pants*
  • Gloves
  • High Socks
  • Something to cover your face
  • Make sure your entire body is covered (Hat, gloves, pants, ect.)
  • Boots with good traction

My #1 recommended snow boot:

Living in Alaska, I have hiked in various terrains, deep snow, high mountains, thick mud. I've tried many different boots and this particular boot I live by. I love it because it is waterproof, if the boot gets wet it dries quickly and its extremely difficult for your feet to get wet or uncomfortable.

  • Columbia Fairbanks Omni-Heat Snow-Boot

We have a saying in Alaska that "there is no bad weather, only bad gear."

Some recommended brands we love:

  • Carhartt
  • Patagonia
  • Ororo Heated Apparel
  • REI
  • The North Face
  • Columbia

What should I not wear?

Packing for a winter trip to Alaska can be tricky, but we are here to help. There are a few items you do not want to pack for a winter trip. We will be traveling to high elevations to the mountains with large amounts of snowfall. We have compiled a list of items you do not want to bring along.

  • Sneakers
  • Spandex pants
  • Loose fitting shoes
  • Tank tops
  • Dresses
  • Short sleeves

Are bathrooms available anywhere on the tour?

Yes, restrooms are available on-site.

How cold is it going to be outside?

Temperatures by month:

October: 19 to 30 degrees

November: 10 to 15 degrees

December: -10 to -12 degrees

January: - 12 to -30 degrees

April: 15 to 20 degrees

Can I see the northern lights in summer?

No. The northern lights are not visible during our summer months, due to our day and night cycles. During summer in Alaska, we have 24-hour daylight and bright summer skies, which occurs May, June, July, August, and September. To view the northern lights, it must be total darkness and colder temperatures.
